2012 Event News
Avon Slovakia held its second Avon Walk on June 16, 2012, as a part of the Avon Walk Around the World for Breast Cancer. More than 4,000 participants convened in the historic center of Slovakia’s capital, Bratislava, to raise funds and awareness for the breast cancer cause. The event was supported by local celebrities and raised a record $37,100 through the sale of a highly popular specially designed pink shirt and other pink fundraising products. All funds raised were donated to reputable prevention and treatment programs at the Slovak National Oncology Institute, the Slovak League Against Cancer, and the Oncology Institute for Breast Cancer in Bratislava.
Avon Slovakia has been participating in the Avon Walk around the World against Breast Cancer since the program’s inception in 2005. Avon Slovakia began the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade in 1998 and has received numerous awards for its creative public awareness efforts and philanthropic achievements, including a prestigious local award presented by the Pontis Foundation in 2009 for Avon’s long-time commitment to the community. A key objective of the Avon Walk and charity concert was to get women to regularly visit their doctors to ensure early detection.

Prior to this, Russia launched a national breast health education program for senior high school students reaching more than 23,000 girls in 2006 and held other awareness events in 2005 including a press conference highlighting the work being done to fight breast cancer in Russia.

Avon Germany has been participating in the Avon Walk Around the World for Breast Cancer since its inception in 2005, when 1,000 women took part in Avon Germany’s 5K and 10K walk/run for women in Munich. Today, Avon Running, Running Against Breast Cancer, is the largest women’s race in Germany and one of the biggest events worldwide in the fight against breast cancer.
On May 12, 2012, a record 18,516 runners participated in the event held in Berlin. Participants from amateur to professional levels had the option of running 5K or 10K, power walking or Nordic walking, and even children under age 10 were able to participate in the "Bambini Run." The event also provided educational information, including the opportunity to mimic a breast exam with silicone models to give people a realistic experience of how small or large lumps can feel in the breast.
The event raised funds through registration fees matched in part by Avon Breast Cancer Crusade fundraising products and donations from committed running teams sponsored by corporations, friends and colleagues. Nearly $40,000 was raised and donated to the Berlin Cancer Society for their "Hardship Fund," a program directed toward women who are in critical need of financial assistance due to their breast cancer diagnosis.
Since 2002, Avon Germany has raised over $2.9 million for the breast cancer cause.
United Kingdom Walk
On March 18, 2012, Mothering Sunday, thousands of walkers descended upon Kettering’s Wicksteed Park wearing an array of wacky and wonderful hats to participate in the 10th annual Crazy Hats walk. For the fifth year, Avon UK sponsored this much-loved local event, which raises funds for women and their families affected by breast cancer.
Just over 2,500 people turned out on a cold wet day to show their support, helping to raise awareness and money to beat breast cancer. Marking the 20th anniversary of the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade, the milestone walk also formed the UK leg of the Avon Walk Around the World for Breast Cancer.
Avon UK Vice President of Sales and Commercial Activation, Mark Duncan, took the stage to present Crazy Hats founder Glennis Hooper with a check for £5,000. The donation will be used to support Crazy Hats’ ongoing fund and awareness raising activities, enabling the charity to help more women and their families who are dealing with the effects of breast cancer.
Crazy Hats founder Glennis Hooper commented, “Avon’s ongoing and unprecedented support of the breast cancer cause over the last 20 years has been truly tremendous. As well as making a global impact, it has enabled a small grass roots charity, like Crazy Hats, to continue to grow. This year, Avon’s donation will help us to continue to give support to and secure better treatments for local women affected by breast cancer.”
Avon UK has been a participant in the Avon Walk Around the World for Breast Cancer program since it began in 2005 with a variety of impressive events. The first event in 2005 was held at the Venerable House of Lords with a Tour of the Houses of Parliament and a reception in Abbey Gardens. In 2006 Avon held an event to celebrate €10 million euros donated to Breakthrough since the Crusade began in 1992. The event was followed by the announcement of a ground-breaking new research project called The Generations Study, a 40-year study now following 100,000 women across the United Kingdom observing and recording every element of their lifestyle as part of a major study exploring the causes of breast cancer.
One of the UK’s most devastating diseases with almost 46,000 women diagnosed each year, Avon’s Breast Cancer Crusade began in the UK in 1992. Since then, the UK has donated over $23 million US dollars to the breast cancer cause.
Avon Guatemala kicked off the 2012 Avon Walk Around the World for Breast Cancer series on March 4, in Guatemala City. The popular women’s event has grown from 1,000 participants to more than 5,500 in 2012 and is one of the most visible and competitive events in the country. Early in the morning, Avenida Reforma, one of the most prominent avenues in Guatemala City, was filled with thousands of women wearing pink Avon Walk Around the World t-shirts, demonstrating their support for the cause. One of the most emotional moments during the event was the Global Connection Ribbon ceremony. The ceremony symbolically connects breast cancer survivors and participants across the world and is a reminder of this global community’s shared determination to turn every diagnosis into a story of survival.
