Avon Foundation for Women Announces 2013 Avon Walk for Breast Cancer Schedule
Walks Take Place in Eight Cities Across the United States
New York, NY, Jan. 2, 2013 – Lace up your sneakers and get ready for the 2013 Avon Walk for Breast Cancer season! The Avon Foundation for Women released the 2013 Avon Walk schedule today, kicking off the 11th season of taking steps towards creating a world without breast cancer. The funds raised by the Avon Walk series — which begins in April and runs through October — advance access to quality breast health care for all and fund research into the prevention and causes of breast cancer and ultimately, a cure.
During the 2012 Avon Walk season, more than 17,000 participants raised nearly $47 million for hundreds of breast cancer organizations in the nine Walk cities and across the United States. During the Avon Walk Closing Ceremonies throughout the season, the Avon Foundation awarded 77 grants to leading cancer centers, research institutions and community-based organizations in the Walk regions, followed by hundreds of additional grants to other organizations throughout the year. The 2013 Avon Walk for Breast Cancer series takes place in eight cities: Houston (April 20-21), Washington, DC (May 4-5), Boston (May 18-19), Chicago (June 1-2), Santa Barbara (September 7-8), San Francisco (September 28-29), New York City (October 19-20), and Charlotte, NC (October 26-27).
“The Avon Foundation is continuously inspired by the devotion, passion and energy of each and every Avon Walker and Crew member,” said Avon Foundation for Women President Carol Kurzig. “Over the past decade, our dedicated participants have helped raise more than $470 million, enabling the Avon Foundation to award grants to organizations in the Walk cities and around the United States that are conducting life-saving breast cancer research and providing access to breast health screening and care for those in need.”
Since 2003, Avon Walk participants have collectively walked 5.9 million miles – that’s 236 times around the globe. All of that walking and fund-raising has helped the Avon Foundation fund access to more than 3 million mammograms in the United States and award more than 2,300 grants for breast cancer research, clinical care and support services.
The Avon Walk series, the Avon Foundation’s largest fund-raising event, comprises eight non-competitive weekend fund-raising walks for all fitness levels. Each walker is required to raise at least $1,800 in donations and to prepare physically for the event, which offers the option of walking up to a marathon (26.2 miles) or a marathon and a half (39.3 miles) over a weekend. Among the walkers’ ranks in 2012 were women and men and women from nearly every state and multiple countries, including more than 2,120 breast cancer survivors. This large, diverse group was united by their shared desire to eradicate breast cancer and help those touched by the disease.
Often described by participants as a “life-changing weekend,” the Avon Walk weekend kicks off with an inspiring opening ceremony on Saturday morning, followed by walking up to a marathon throughout the day. Participants spend the night at the Avon Walk “Wellness Village,” a “tent city” complete with two-person pink tents, hot showers, hot meals, entertainment, and activities. On Sunday, walkers complete the final 13.1-mile leg of their journey, followed by a poignant closing ceremony and the presentation of local grants.

About the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer
The Avon Walk for Breast Cancer series is a project of the Avon Foundation for Women, a 501(c)(3) public charity. Since its launch in 2003, the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer series has raised more than $470 million through the dedication of nearly 180,000 participating women and men from across the country, including hundreds of Avon Associates and Representatives. The Avon Foundation awards the funds raised to local, regional and national breast cancer organizations to support breast cancer education, screening and diagnosis, access to treatment, support services, and scientific research. The Walks take place in eight cities, covering 39 miles in two days, and raise significant awareness and funds to fight breast cancer. The Avon Walk for Breast Cancer Series is the largest fund-raising event for the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade. Since Avon launched the Crusade in 1992, Avon breast cancer programs in 58 countries have donated more than $780 million for research and advancing access to care. REMEMBER, EARLY DETECTION HELPS SAVE LIVES. Get a mammogram. Know your breasts and report any changes to your doctor. Talk to your doctor about your risk. And encourage women around you to do the same. Don't forget, men can get breast cancer, too.
