Avon Foundation for Women Speak Out Against Domestic Violence Program Awards $500,000 to fund 51 Domestic Violence Organizations Across the United States and Puerto Rico

NEW YORK, NY, June 15, 2010 – The Avon Foundation for Women today announced it has awarded $500,000 to 51 organizations providing direct services to domestic violence victims. The one-year grants are part of an annual Avon Foundation for Women program that invites Avon regional offices across the United States to nominate local non-profit organizations for funding under the Avon Foundation for Women Speak Out Against Domestic Violence program.

The Avon Foundation has been providing grants to local non-profits focused on ending domestic violence since 2006. These new grants will support victims across the United States and Puerto Rico and deliver essential services such as shelter, counseling, educational and professional training, as well as advocacy and case management for victims of domestic violence and their families.

Around the world, at least one in every three women has experienced some form of partner violence or abuse during her lifetime. Although research shows most victims are women, men can also be domestic violence victims. The grants will help ensure that all victims have access to services that will help them rebuild their lives and break the cycle of domestic violence for themselves, their families, and future generations.

Avon and the Avon Foundation for Women launched the Speak Out Against Domestic Violence program in 2004 to help end the cycle of domestic violence. Through the end of 2010 in the U.S. alone, the Avon Foundation for Women has provided more than $23 million for domestic and gender violence programs, including support for awareness, education, direct service and prevention.

“The Avon Foundation for Women is committed to helping end the cycle of domestic violence and is proud to support these beneficiaries in their work to help victims across the United States and Puerto Rico,” says Carol Kurzig, President, Avon Foundation for Women. “It is through the combination of local, national and international efforts that Avon philanthropy is working to eradicate domestic violence and ensure safety for all women and families.”
