Avon Walk for Breast Cancer Completes its 10th Birthday Season October 27-28 in Charlotte

Thousands of Participants from the Carolinas and Across the U.S. are "In It to End It" at Annual Weekend Fundraising Event to Support Breast Cancer Cause

Charlotte, NC, August 24, 2012 – The 2012 Avon Walk for Breast Cancer series returns for its eighth year to North Carolina with the Avon Walk Charlotte on October 27-28, which is the last Walk of the 2012 Avon Walk 10th birthday season. The Avon Walk series brings together thousands of participants – including breast cancer survivors – who are dedicated to raising life-saving funds for the breast cancer cause. Last year’s Avon Walk Charlotte raised more than $1.7 million and attracted 900 participants, including 108 breast cancer survivors, from 38 states, Washington, D.C. and Canada.

The Avon Walks offer participants a choice of walking a marathon (26.2 miles) or a marathon-and-a-half (39.3 miles) over a weekend. Walkers raise a minimum of $1,800 to participate and the Avon Foundation for Women distributes the funds raised to local, regional and national breast cancer organizations. The Avon Foundation has awarded more than $15 million to organizations and institutions in North and South Carolina, including the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, Carolinas HealthCare System and Duke University.

Whether participants are taking part in the Avon Walk for a personal reason or to help support the breast cancer cause, they all have a story to tell. Beverly Amarello of Concord, NC, is an 11-year breast cancer survivor participating in her third Avon Walk Charlotte. She walks with her daughter while her husband volunteers at the event. The entire Amarello family participates in the Walk to ensure Beverly’s daughter will never have to fight her own battle with breast cancerAlso participating in this year’s Walk for the third time is breast cancer survivor Vicki Downing-Watson of Fayetteville, NC. Vicki’s two daughters, along with her mother and sister (both of whom are also breast cancer survivors) will walk with Vicki this year.
