Avon Walk for Breast Cancer Continues 10th Birthday Season July 7-8 in San Francisco

Thousands of Participants from Northern California and Across the U.S. are In It to End It in the 10th Annual Weekend-long Event to Raise Life-saving Funds and Breast Cancer Awareness

San Francisco, CA, June 6, 2012 – The 2012 Avon Walk for Breast Cancer series returns for its tenth year in San Francisco on July 7-8. The Avon Walk series brings together thousands of participants – including breast cancer survivors – who are dedicated to raising life-saving funds for the breast cancer cause. Last year’s Avon Walk for Breast Cancer San Francisco raised more than $4.2 million and attracted more than 2,000 participants from 38 states and Washington, D.C.

The Avon Walk series, which launched nationwide in 2003, offers participants a choice of walking a marathon (26.2 miles) or a marathon and a half (39.3 miles) over a weekend, and requires walkers to raise at least $1,800 for the breast cancer cause. The Avon Foundation for Women distributes funds raised to local, regional and national breast cancer organizations, including the Avon Comprehensive Breast Care Center at San Francisco General Hospital, one of eight Avon Foundation Centers of Excellence in the United States; Zero Breast Cancer, Project Open Hand and Stanford University. The Avon Foundation has awarded more than $38.2 million to organizations in Northern California to date.

Whether participants are taking part in the Avon Walk for a personal reason or to help support the breast cancer cause, they all have a personal story to tell. Lillie Margo, a breast cancer survivor from Montara, CA, has participated in nine Avon Walks. Now preparing for her tenth season, Lillie goal is to raise more than $10,000 for this year’s event. Another dedicated fundraiser, Barbara Albright of Millbrae, CA, 69, will participate in her 13th Avon Walk this July. Barbara said she walks because “she can,” and is “in it to end it” for those who can’t.
