Avon Walk for Breast Cancer Kicks Off 10th Birthday Season in Houston on April 21-22
Thousands of Participants from Houston and Across the U.S. are "In It to End It" in Annual Weekend Fundraising Event to Support Breast Cancer Cause
Houston, TX, March 15, 2012 – The 2012 Avon Walk for Breast Cancer series kicks off its fifth year in Houston on April 21-22. The Avon Walk series, which honors its 10th birthday in 2012, brings together thousands of participants – including breast cancer survivors – who are dedicated to raising life-saving funds for the breast cancer cause. Last year’s Avon Walk for Breast Cancer Houston drew more than 1,000 participants from 31 states, including 91 breast cancer survivors, who raised more than $1.8 million to advance access to care and fund research into preventing and finding a cure for breast cancer.
The Avon Walks offer participants a choice of walking a marathon (26.2 miles) or a marathon-and-a-half (39.3 miles) over a weekend. Walkers raise a minimum of $1,800 to participate and the Avon Foundation for Women distributes the funds raised to local, regional and national breast cancer organizations. The Avon Foundation has awarded more than $13.3 million to organizations in Texas, including the University of Texas – MD Anderson Cancer Center, Baylor College of Medicine and Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital/University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
Whether participants are taking part in the Avon Walk for a personal reason or to help support the breast cancer cause, they all have a personal story to tell. Bonnie Castle, a Stage 3 breast cancer survivor from Houston, TX, is participating in this year’s Houston Walk to ensure her two daughters will not have to endure the same pain she did. Other participants include Mary O’Neil, traveling all the way from Chesterbrook, PA to participate her ninth walk (first in Houston), and Tricia Opincar from Magnolia, TX who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and is undergoing treatment, but is committed to walking.
